Description
Pharmacokinetics:
Tropicamide, a muscarinic receptor antagonist, is rapidly absorbed following topical administration to the eye. It achieves peak plasma concentrations within 15 to 30 minutes and undergoes hepatic metabolism. The medication’s duration of action is relatively short, typically lasting 4 to 6 hours. Tropicamide is primarily excreted unchanged in the urine.
Pharmacodynamics:
As a mydriatic and cycloplegic agent, Tropicamide blocks the action of acetylcholine at muscarinic receptors in the eye, resulting in pupillary dilation (mydriasis) and paralysis of the ciliary muscle (cycloplegia). These effects facilitate eye examinations by providing a clear view of the posterior segment of the eye and immobilizing accommodation, respectively.
Drug Classification:
Tropicamide belongs to the class of drugs known as anticholinergics or antimuscarinics. It selectively inhibits the activity of acetylcholine at muscarinic receptors in the eye, producing reversible dilation of the pupil and temporary paralysis of accommodation.
Formulations:
Our Tropicamide Range is available in the following formulation:
- Eye Drops: 0.1% w/v
- Each bottle contains 15 ml of solution for ophthalmic use.
Indications:
Tropicamide is indicated for various diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including:
- Ophthalmic examinations (e.g., fundoscopy, refraction)
- Treatment of inflammatory conditions of the eye (when accompanied by pupillary dilation and cycloplegia)
- Prevention of posterior synechiae formation following ocular trauma or surgery
Usage:
For ophthalmic use only. Instill 1 or 2 drops of Tropicamide solution into the conjunctival sac of the eye(s) to be examined, as directed by your healthcare provider. Repeat as necessary to achieve the desired level of pupil dilation and cycloplegia. Avoid touching the tip of the dropper to the eye or any other surface to prevent contamination.
Dosage:
The dosage of Tropicamide may vary depending on the specific procedure and individual patient factors. Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions carefully and use the medication as directed. Do not exceed the recommended dosage or frequency of administration without consulting your doctor.
Side Effects:
Common side effects of Tropicamide may include transient stinging or burning upon instillation, blurred vision, photophobia, and increased intraocular pressure. Less common but potentially serious side effects may include systemic anticholinergic effects such as tachycardia, dry mouth, and urinary retention. If you experience any unexpected or severe side effects, discontinue use and seek medical attention promptly.
