Description
Pharmacokinetics:
Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) and Propylene Glycol (PG) are widely used pharmaceutical excipients with minimal systemic absorption when administered topically. PEG is a water-soluble polymer that functions as a lubricant and humectant, while PG is a solvent and vehicle that enhances the solubility and stability of active ingredients. Upon ocular administration, these agents provide moisturizing and lubricating effects, promoting comfort and hydration of the ocular surface.
Pharmacodynamics:
Polyethylene Glycol and Propylene Glycol exert their pharmacodynamic effects primarily by hydrating and lubricating the ocular surface. PEG forms a protective layer over the cornea and conjunctiva, reducing friction and discomfort associated with dry eye conditions. PG enhances the penetration and distribution of active ingredients, optimizing the therapeutic efficacy of ophthalmic medications.
Drug Classification:
Polyethylene Glycol and Propylene Glycol are classified as pharmaceutical excipients and vehicles commonly used in ophthalmic preparations. They are inert substances that enhance the stability, solubility, and bioavailability of active pharmaceutical ingredients in topical formulations.
Formulations:
AIT Pharmaceuticals Division offers Polyethylene Glycol and Propylene Glycol in the following formulation:
- Eye Drops: Each ml contains 4 mg of Polyethylene Glycol and 3 mg of Propylene Glycol in a sterile ophthalmic solution, packed in a convenient dropper bottle with a capacity of 15 ml.
