Description
Pharmacokinetics:
Timolol maleate, a non-selective beta-adrenergic receptor antagonist, is rapidly absorbed into the systemic circulation following ocular administration (E. Drop). Once absorbed, timolol undergoes extensive hepatic metabolism, primarily via oxidation and conjugation, before being excreted in the urine. The onset of action is typically observed within 20 minutes of administration, with peak plasma concentrations achieved within 1-2 hours.
Pharmacodynamics:
Timolol maleate belongs to the class of beta-adrenergic receptor antagonists, which exert their pharmacological effects by blocking the beta-adrenergic receptors in the ciliary body of the eye. By reducing the production of aqueous humor, timolol maleate lowers intraocular pressure (IOP) and helps prevent optic nerve damage and visual field loss associated with ocular hypertension and glaucoma.
Drug Classification:
Timolol maleate is classified as a beta-adrenergic receptor antagonist and belongs to the class of antiglaucoma agents. It is commonly used in ophthalmology to manage elevated intraocular pressure and reduce the risk of optic nerve damage in patients with glaucoma.
Formulations:
Our Timolol Maleate Range is available in the following formulations:
Eye Drops: Each ml contains 0.5 mg of timolol maleate in a sterile ophthalmic solution.
Indications:
Timolol maleate is indicated for the reduction of elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with ocular hypertension or open-angle glaucoma. It may be used as monotherapy or adjunctive therapy in combination with other ocular hypotensive agents to achieve target IOP levels and preserve visual function.
Usage:
Shake the bottle well before each use. Instill one drop of Timolol Maleate into the affected eye(s) twice daily, approximately 12 hours apart, or as directed by your healthcare provider. Tilt your head back, pull down the lower eyelid, and place the prescribed number of drops into the eye(s) without touching the dropper tip to any surface. Close your eyes gently and apply light pressure to the inner corner of the eye for 1-2 minutes to prevent drainage and systemic absorption.
Dosage:
The recommended dosage of Timolol Maleate is one drop into the affected eye(s) twice daily, approximately 12 hours apart. Your healthcare provider may adjust the dosage regimen based on your individual response to treatment and the severity of your condition. Do not exceed the prescribed dosage without consulting your healthcare provider.
Side Effects:
Common side effects of Timolol Maleate may include transient stinging or burning upon instillation, ocular irritation, blurred vision, and dry eyes. Systemic side effects such as bradycardia, bronchospasm, and hypotension may occur, particularly in patients with cardiovascular or respiratory conditions. Rare but serious side effects may include corneal anesthesia, corneal erosion, and exacerbation of underlying cardiac or pulmonary disease. If you experience any unusual symptoms or side effects, contact your healthcare provider promptly.
